About UP

1. What is the UPCAT?

The University of the Philippines College Admission Test or UPCAT is the exam taken by students who wish to study at the University of the Philippines. This exam is required for all incoming new freshman. For details click this link

2. How do i qualify for UP?

You qualify for UP when your UPG is within the upper limit of the UP Campus where you wish to enter. For example, UP Diliman has a cut-off of about 2.2, UPLB has a cut-off of about 2.4 and UP Davao has a cut-off of 2.8. The UPG is computed by transmuting your High School Average and adding it to your UPCAT score. A more detailed computation can be found here.

3. Which UP Campus should I choose?

The University of the Philippines has 9 independent campuses namely UP Diliman, UP Manila, UP Los Baños, UP Visayas, UP Davao, UP Baguio, UP Iloilo, UP San Fernando and UP Open University. Each campus has it's own specialization, for example UP Manila is the center for medical science and UP Iloilo is the center for fisheries. Our advice is for you to choose the campus that would fit the course that you want to take. However, I would also like to note that UP Diliman and UP Manila has the highest UPG cut-off of all the 9 campuses. For further detail on each campus click here

4. Is it true the UP has increased their tuition fee?

Yes, the tuition fee for UP has increased. However it isn't as drastic as some people would like to point out. The STFAP bracket system has adequately taken into account the annual family income of a student entering the University. I would just like to note that you must apply for the STFAP bracket. If you dont process your application, you will be placed in the highest bracket and will have to pay full price. To have a summary of STFAP brackets click here.

5. Are there scholarships available?

Yes there are several scholarships available for UP students. One of the most numerous scholarship grant in UP is form the DOST-SEI Scholarship Program. Most scholarship grants are posted the Office of Student Affairs on every UP campus. The STFAP bracket system also ensures that financially challenged students have reduced tuition fees and receive monthly stipends.

6. Am I required to enroll in a review before I could take the UPCAT?

NO. Several students have been asking whether UP requires students to enroll in a review center or if UP endorses any specific review center. The answer is NO. Students are not required to enroll in any review center before the UPCAT. At the same time, UP does not and will not endorse any review center. I write this because some students have the impression that they wont be allowed to take the UPCAT if they don't review. That is just not true. However, we encourage students to study for the UPCAT as they would for any other exam.

7. Is the UPCAT right minus wrong?

YES and NO. The UPCAT is right minus a fraction of the wrong answer. The total correct answers that you will get in the UPCAT will be deducted by a portion, usually around one-fourth, of the number of wrong answers that you make.

UPCAT Results

1. What if my name doesn't appear on the results?

It means that you did not qualify for the course and campus that you have applied for. This does not mean however, that you no longer have any chance of entering UP. When you receive your UPG and find that your UPG is 2.8 or higher, then you may still apply for waitlisting to a UP campus. The requirements of each campus is different but a common requirement is that you have written, the campus you wish to apply for waitlisting, at least as 2nd choice in your UPCAT application form. For example, if you wrote UP Diliman and UP Manila as your first and second choice campus, then you may apply for waitlisting only in those two campuses.

It is for the above reason that we assist our reviewees when filing their UPCAT application forms to maximize their chances of entering UP. If you are a reviewee of Review Masters last year and received a UPG of 2.8 or higher, please contact me at +63(0906)-469-2446 so that we could assist you in applying for waitlisting.

2. What do i do if my name is pending?

DON'T WORRY. Let me say that again, don't worry. A pending case usually means that you have qualified for UP but have a few problems with your requirements. Some of the most common pending cases occur when a student is born in another country or if the student has transferred schools. If that is the case, simply provide your birth certificate or school records.

UP mentions in their website that if a name is pending and is removed, then the student no longer qualifies. While that may be true, the number of those cases are very few if any. So when you see your name with a pending case you should: celebrate because you have qualified for UP then immediately process any requirements you may need so that your name would be removed from the pending list.

3. What is the INTARMED Program and Oblation Scholars?

The INTARMED Program is an integrated medicine program where a student would take a 7-year medicine course instead of the usual 10-year course. To qualify for the INTARMED program, you have to indicate in your UPCAT application form that you wish to be considered. The top 100 male an top 100 female UPCAT examinees will then be considered for entry to the INTARMED program.

The Oblation Scholarship is awarded to the top 50 UPCAT examinees. An oblation scholar is granted full scholarship and receives allowances for as long as they maintain a high grade point average.

4. Can I take other entrance exams if I already took the UPCAT?

Yes you can. In fact, we encourage you to do so. Some students have the impression that they are no longer allowed to take any other exam or do not wish to take other exams after they have taken the UPCAT. But that shouldn't be the case. It would be much better to take other exams and choose which university you would like to enter when you qualify. In fact, it is not uncommon for our reviewees to qualify for UP, Ateneo, De La Salle ans UST all at the same time. All they have to do now is choose where they want to study. And that should be the case for you too.
