Part 3
I had been a proctor of the UPCAT for so many years that I already memorized parts of the script that we, UPCAT Examiners, were required to read verbatim. Yes, the UPCAT has a script. And during the briefing of proctors and examiners, it is always emphasized that we could not deviate from the script and we must read it word for word. What is interesting about the script is that it somehow gives the examinees some tips on how to score better in the UPCAT but due to a lot of test anxiety factors, we observe that those freely-given tips do not sink-in to the minds of the test-takers. So while the UPCAT is still weeks to go, I would like to share with you a part of the UPCAT script that would help you answer as many items in the UPCAT as possible given a very limited time. This is our…

Issue #7

How to Ace Any Multiple-Choice Test Like the UPCAT

Part 2
Lost in Numbers? Would you agree that most students have difficulty in solving numerical problems? Are you one of them? Do you spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to set-up the equation, or use the formulas in Physics, or balance a given chemical reaction, or factor a certain trinomial, or solve an equation in two variables, and so on and so forth? You simply CANNOT afford to do that when you are taking a time-pressured, highly-competitive college entrance exam like the UPCAT!

For a numerical problem, solving it for more than a minute will surely kill you! As much as possible, you should NOT sacrifice speed over accuracy and vice versa. You need them both for you to maximize your score in the UPCAT. And how could you possibly have both speed and accuracy in your arsenal if you are a self-proclaimed Math-hater? First, of course, is that you need to condition yourself that you really like (if not love) Math! Anyway, you have no choice but encounter mathematical problems in the UPCAT. Positive mental attitude is a key. Second, you need to master our…

Test-Taking Strategy #2. This strategy applies best to numerical problems and it is a time-saving strategy because you will, in a way, take short-cuts in solving mathematical problems. The principle behind this strategy is this: The answer is in the choices. The beauty of answering a multiple-choice type test is you are pretty sure that one of the choices is the correct answer! So you might as well use the choices themselves to figure out which of them shall fit-in to the solution of the problem. This strategy is what we call:

Working Backwards. Instead of starting with the given information, establishing the equation, solving for the unknown and then looking for the answer among the choices, it will save you a lot of time if you will begin by fitting-in each of the choices to the given information. The one that satisfies all the given conditions would be the correct answer. In a matter of seconds, you would be able to get the one correct answer without doing the rigors of setting-up the equation and solving for the unknown! Combining this strategy with the first one (Eliminating Wrong Answers) would be a very powerful test-taking skill. And as I have said in the previous issue, any skill should be mastered before you can have the confidence of bringing it in the battlefield as your deadly weapon against the dreaded and sometimes frightening numerical problems. With these two strategies, you won’t fear numbers anymore in any multiple-choice test!

To learn more about Test-Taking Strategy #2, watch this video:

Our next issue shall tackle how to answer ALL of almost 300 questions in the UPCAT given a very limited amount of time. Don’t miss it!

Issue #6

How to Ace Any Multiple-Choice Test Like the UPCAT

Part 1

Test-Taking Strategy #1. This next set of tips may sound too early because these tricks would be applied during the time that you would be taking the UPCAT. But I decided to give them to you now since you have already decided to review this early for the UPCAT. And since you would have the privilege to practice on hundreds of our Compiled UPCAT Questions, you might as well practice applying these test-taking strategies that made several average students ace multiple-choice tests such as their Long Exams, Quarterly Exams, and of course, the UPCAT. The first strategy is my personal favorite. This strategy allowed me to get higher scores on subjects that I least like. This strategy made me enjoy taking Multiple Choice Tests as if I was just playing Sudoku. This strategy along with the other test-taking strategies I am going to share made Sir Neb (one of the authors of 37 Tips on How to Pass the UPCAT the Sure Way) landed the 6th spot in the Master Electrician Licensure Examination without reviewing for it! The first test-taking strategy is called Eliminating Wrong Answers. I will explain to you first why this strategy could help you score higher in a multiple choice test. We will be tackling…

Probability. If, for every item in a multiple-choice test, there are four choices, what is the probability that you would get the correct answer? If you will just have a wild guess, then it is one-out-of-four or 25%. But, if you know that one of the choices is wrong, you will NOT choose it! This increases the probability of getting the correct answer to one-out-of-three or 33.33%. What if you could eliminate two choices because you are sure enough that those choices are impossible answers? Then the probability now becomes one-out-of-two or 50%! You’ve already doubled your chance of getting the correct answer! Now, this is the most enjoyable part in a multiple-choice test: You don’t have any idea on how to answer the question  or to solve a numerical problem. But based on the choices, you know that not only one, not only two, but three of the choices were completely wrong! What is your probability? Yes! One-out-of-one or a remarkable 100%! Impossible? No! I myself had encountered a lot of questions wherein I had eliminated all the choices EXCEPT for one. And what would I conclude? Of course, I would smile my biggest smile because I was 100% sure that the remaining choice is the CORRECT ANSWER! And that’s where the fun begins! My confidence in answering the remaining parts of the test was boosted-up. Instead of getting nervous, I got so excited to finish the test knowing that I could really maximize my score in that test. The UPCAT like any other multiple-choice test is also a probability game. You could probably answer the majority of the items with ease but for those items you don’t know how to answer, then this strategy is very helpful. Remember, it is not just getting the correct answers; it is about having the most number of correct answers as possible. You need to score higher than your fellow examinees. You might ask, how can this strategy of Eliminating Wrong Answers be mastered? Like the rest of the strategies I am going to share with you, this strategy is a skill. And a skill is mastered through…

Constant Practice. Yes, by applying the skill while you are reviewing the Compiled UPCAT Questions, you would be able to master it. It would at first slow you down, bore you, or even irritate you. Don’t worry. It is just normal for any beginner. Especially if you’re more used to wild guessing (that is, inny-minne-minny-mo) when encountering tough questions. But I tell you, as a novice of this skill, you need a conscious effort to master it. My advice? While answering an item, try to open a reference (book or internet site) and from those resources, try to establish a basis to eliminate one or more choices as wrong. By doing this, not only that you are enhancing the skill but you are also adding basic knowledge about the topic you are reviewing. So that’s hitting two birds with one stone! You get smarter and at the same time more intelligent!

YouTube Link. The following is a video presentation of Test-Taking Strategy #1: Eliminating Wrong Answers.

In the next issue I will discuss the most practical test-taking strategy you need when answering numerical problems in Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics. So stay online!

Issue #5

The Secrets Why Some Average Students Were Able to Pass the UPCAT – the Sure Way!

Part 3

Secret #3 Did you know that every human being is a genius? Every child born on earth has an innate ingenuity. But majority of humanity do not know this. Majority of them were raised to believe that each one’s mind differs from another in terms of capacity and capability primarily due to genetics. Many believe that there are people who were born with superior intelligence carried in their genetic make-up. Perhaps genes have something to do with man’s intelligence, but not to a large extent. It is not true that Chinese are good in Math because they are Chinese. A lot of Chinese people excel in Math because they know Secret #3. So how does one become a genius? How can you unleash the genius in you? This is our Secret #3…

Thomas Alva Edison, the inventor of the electric light bulb, stated the best definition of “genius”. He said,

“Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.”

What did he exactly mean by that? To unleash the genius in us, we have to work on it persistently (remember the Habit of Persistence). We only need a little inspiration to motivate us and a lot of work to master the things that we need to master. Throughout the history of mankind across the globe, those who were classified as geniuses because they had contributed a lot of beneficial ideas and things to the world through their inventions, scientific findings, technological breakthroughs and even spiritual and supernatural concepts, did not reach their goals at a snap of their fingers! They weren’t able to accomplish things successfully overnight. They had to persevere to gain perfection. They had to discipline themselves to produce excellent results. They had to unceasingly ask for wisdom from the Infinite Intelligence to give them the mastery of their chosen fields of endeavor.

Now, what can we learn from these so-called “geniuses’? For you to be able to pass the UPCAT the sure way, you need to…

Practice, Practice, Practice. You can be a genius even if you’re just an average student in your school. If you’re already psyched-up and emotionally ready to pass the UPCAT (as you’ve learned from the previous issues, then it’s time for you to ACT! There’s a truth in the saying that “Action speaks louder than words.” It’s time for you to unleash the genius in you!

There’s no really time to spare since it’s only a few months before the UPCAT. The only way to beat other aspiring UPCAT applicants is for you to play it smart. Yes, you need to think of the UPCAT as a game. Those of you who play online games (a.k.a. DOTA) or even ball games like basketball, can testify that a lot of practice, a lot of work, discipline and conditioning are needed to become an expert in any game that you play. This is also very true for UPCAT. The more you “play” UPCAT, the better your performance in the UPCAT will be. If you plan to “play” UPCAT a few weeks or days before the scheduled UPCAT in early August, forget about it! You won’t be able to get the much needed edge over your fellow competitors. You need to “play” UPCAT NOW and everyday thereafter. You need to “play” as many UPCATs as possible so that come the actual UPCAT time, you are more prepared than anybody else. Again, there is no more time to spare. The desire is in you. You’ve already received by faith that you already passed the UPCAT. So you should not waste any time just believing that you could make it. You have to allot some precious quality time, say 30 minutes or just one hour a day, to practice, practice, and practice!

Here are some practical suggestions that you can follow (these are what our hundreds of average students did to pass the UPCAT the sure way):

ACT NOW Option#1. Purchase UPCAT Reviewers from the bookstores. Answer just one section (or 50 items) a day every other day. Self-check your answer using the score key. For the items that you failed to answer correctly, analyze and research for the correct explanation (use references such as your textbooks or the internet). If you can do this without faltering until the week before the UPCAT, you might have been able to answer more than a thousand questions already.

ACT NOW Option#2. Hire professional tutors preferably experts in college entrance exams and make regular appointments (thrice a week) with them to personally train you for the UPCAT. This suggestion is helpful especially if you don’t have a very strong study habit. You will be “forced” to have the habit until it is already in your system. But if your budget allows it, extend the tutorial sessions until late July.

ACT NOW Option#3. Enroll in the Online UPCAT Review Program. The beauty of enrolling now is that you would get a distant headstart against your fellow competitors. This is because a lot of them would be cramming for the UPCAT review when you have already passed midway of your training. Once enrolled, you can download all the ten volumes of the Compiled UPCAT Questions. You can practice anytime you want right at the comfort of your home. You can consult and post questions online through our live UPCAT Forum. You can have all the explanations presented via YouTube or SlideShare. You can also chat with the mentors via Skype. You will get the benefits of Options 1 and 2 plus a lot more! This is the ultimate weapon in your arsenal. You are going to the biggest war you would ever fight. So you have to prepare not tomorrow, not next week or next month, but NOW!

BELIEVE and ACT NOW!

In my next issue, I will tackle some test-taking skills that you need to master for you to ace any multiple-choice type of exams. You can apply these tips to the multiple-choice tests that you still have to take in your respective schools. These tips helped average students to score higher in the UPCAT. So don’t miss it!

Issue #4

The Secrets Why Some Average Students Were Able to Pass the UPCAT – the Sure Way!

Part 2

Secret #2 Now that you are ready to receive the reward of passing the UPCAT, the next step is to develop a very important habit that every average student can acquire easily for this habit does not require a superior intelligence, any academic achievement, and a great time or effort. Now, before I share with you this simple but badly-needed habit, let me tell you another story…

If you were still amazed with the story of my son in the previous issue, then this time, you might not believe anymore. This is the story of another successful UPCAT examinee who developed the habit that I would be sharing with you later. He is a classmate and a close friend of my son.

Like my son, this fellow has a lot of extra-curricular activities in and out of their school campus. He is also a basketball varsitarian. He plays DOTA much longer than my son does. He plays the guitar for their school band. Every now and then, he courts the pretty girls around. He is a certified “gimikero“unlike my son who is a home-buddy.

The real difference between the two is that though my son did not belong to the top five of their class, he still was able to land a spot in the honor roll while this classmate of his never became an honor student during his four years in high school. And believe it or not, this kid’s name belongs to the list of qualifiers in the recent UPCAT Results.

But you might say, “There are some schools wherein a lot of their students qualify for UP even though many of those students are not honor students.” True. But according to statistics, those schools with a lot of UPCAT qualifiers year after year are either UP-administered schools (e.g.UP Rural High School), national high schools (e.g.Para
